Zuiun are rare purple or five-colored clouds that appear as omens of auspicious events. It is used as an auspicious pattern in various fields such as textiles, dyeing, metalwork, and maki-e.
A cloud pattern is drawn on a black lacquered ware by Kinpira maki-e, and the gold is polished well to make it shine. Over this, brown transparent transparence urushi lacquer is applied, and then polished with roiro-iro polish to make it shiny. Transparent lacquer is dark in color at first and becomes transparent as time goes by. The cloud patterns gradually emerge as the lacquer is applied.
